Caps Defense, Good Enough to Win?

In my earlier post, The Capitals Need to Win , I wrote about a number of players the Capitals need strong performances from next season in order to be successful. The group had the usual suspects of Ovechkin, Backstrom, Green, and Semin but also included rookie defenseman John Carlson and goaltender Semyon Varlamov. In the post I ask a series of hard questions facing this years Caps that can be best used as benchmarks to evaluate their performance as they work their way through next season.

In his recent Bleacher Report posting, Washington Capitals\’ Fate Rests On Young Defensemen , Sam Synder takes a closer look at the strength of the blue line, a key indicator of success, and a potential vulnerability in calling into question Varlamov’s aptitude to be the #1 goaltender. Sam asks if Varly has the ability to step up his performance, while my post considers whether the team had the ability to do the same.
