BRAVO: Volvo Ocean Race organizers use Google Earth, Facebook, and Youtube to provide fans the best seat in the house that’s not on one of the boats.
Back in the day, offshore sailboat racing was the exclusive purview of the rich boys with toys demographic but corporate sponsorship, shrewd marketing, and social media communications now support an elite class of radical professional athlete/sailors. Race organizers meet their fans where the are by enabling them to track race developments on Google Earth, discuss them on Facebook, and review them on Youtube.
